The questions from Rebecca:
1\What is next step?
2\What are the key differences you notice when you start?
3\What is you purpose of your research question? Why are interested in? And what do you want to achieve?
Answer from me:
1\I don't know yet. I interviewed some international students before. But most of them are the Asian. Because European countries are very closed. They didn't have some strong emotion about culture shock. I got a point "Not Here or There" from American photographer Darcy Holdorf. This is the early stage of foreign academic life for oversea students. We are not belong to UK, and our home country is far away from us at the same time. We are studying at CSM at the monument. It seems like the Third Culture. It is true that culture difference is normal because most international students can experience. I just hope that I can find some issues most of oversea students encounter and tell them something or guide them via my visual work.
2\ There are so many key differences here, such as weather, food, education technics and value and so on. I can obtain different information from different culture. I studied graphic design in China as well. But we have to do anything through the paper or computer in the university. Here, you can do some installations installation posters, animations and so on if you want. The aim of these design work is communication. I realise that the big problem for me is language. As the result, I tried my best to make some works which can communicate visually with a very little language. Any audience here could understand when they stand in front of it.
3\ I want to achieve empathy from other international students. As a designer, I want to use my own way to tell others who we are, and use my experiences to help others who also have similar issues through design.
Suggestions from Rebecca:
You have more then one audience here. Because your audience is the international students, but is also other students because you want to change their perception as well. It's very interesting topic and becoming more important, for the UK audience of universities which includes students, teachers and managers to understand how it feels international students here. UK government has become really strict on what they are require for international students and ask you to sign name and doing lots of things. We know because that is quite unfriendly approach. we need to make sure but we are even more understanding as university and what is feel like to be international students here.
What might designer outcome be to explore that, it would be the guide book , or short film.
Starting thinking about the kind of design solutions, and what may help here? and what is real design problem here?
You need to keep doing what you're doing, you might use your experience or some of other experience you found out about. And try to communicate that experience to somebody, ask somebody who is from the UK, and never be international student. I identify with you I can see the world through your view as well. working on some key things you can try communicate using design to do that.
